  • the dolphins of Jervis Bay are the inshore variety of Bottlenose dolphins called Tursiops aduncus.
  • there are about 60 dolphins that live in Jervis Bay year round.
  • occassionally other dolphins visit from outside Jervis Bay
  • they group consists mainly of females and their young. These are called female bands.
  • dolphins are warm blooded, air breathing mammals that suckle their young
  • at birth dolphins are less than 1m in length and weigh about 10kg
  • males grow to about 2.5m and weigh up to 200kg. Females are slightly smaller
  • dolphins cruise at speeds of about 10kmph and can have bursts of up to 40kmph
  • Male dolphins band together in small groups called male alliances.

  • humpback whales are the fifth largest animal on the planet
  • at birth they are about 4.5m long and weigh about 1,300kg
  • humpback whales grow up to 15m in length and can weigh up to 48,000kg. That’s equivalent to 11 elephants!
  • females grow larger than males
  • females calve every 2-3 years
  • their pectoral fins are one third the length of their body
  • humpbacks are the most acrobatic of all the great whales
  • humpbacks get their name from the way they hump their back before they sound, or dive.
  • Humpback whales are increasing in numbers by about 13% each year.
